The general welfare of a nation's people is a better indication of that nation's greatness than are the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists.
The well-being of people in a nation is crucial for its development. Decent education, health and food are a few of the aspects that define the welfare of people. The direction of the nation lies in the hands of its leaders and other officials in the higher positions. It is important for a country to have achievements, but achievements alone don't reflect the progress of a nation. The welfare of people is a better factor than achievements to indicate the greatness of a nation. Hence, I completely agree with the given suggestion for two reasons.
The basic requirements for the people are healthcare, food, education and jobs. These factors define the welfare of the population of a country. It is absolutely necessary for people to have the choice of choosing their path in life. In other words, people should be given freedom at all times, this will make sure that the people are content and will help in the progress of the nation. For instance if we consider the case of North Korea which is technologically advanced with a lot of achievements in military and other prospects, it is well known that people in that country are restricted in all aspects of life. There have been many instances where people of that nation have tried to flee their country but were unsuccessful and were executed by the country officials. The people who were out of the country expressed that people in the country lived in constant tyranny. This shows that even though a country has remarkable achievements, the people of that country may not be living a happy life.
Further, the achievements of a country could bring name and fame to the people but it wont ensure their welfare. If only a certain section of people like scientists and artists are encouraged in a country it might lead to the development of only that particular field. These achievements in no way help people to live a better life. For example, if in a nation, only scientists are encouraged to do research, experiments, they could achieve a lot in that field. But this will create an imbalance in the society where only a particular field is encouraged and others are side-tracked. It is important for a nation that different fields make progress for its overall development. If the population is ensured its welfare by the nation, then the people will automatically strive in any field of their interest and will bag achievements.
To conclude, the nations priority should be to ensure the well-being of its population which will eventually lead to great achievements rather than only focusing on a particular field and its achievements. History has proved that a nation with happy people will make better progress and development than a nation forcing its people for development. So it is important for a nation to keep its people happy and the achievements will automatically follow.
