Across the globe, golden-ager group who grew up in a pre-digital era are finding it strenuous to manoeuvre these widgets. The upcoming paragraphs deal with the causes of this issue and will offer some suggestions to lend a hand to them in using the same.
To begin with, technology has driven a variety of societal, medical and technical trends which has become an integral part of people's daily lives. However, there are still roadblocks that need to be considered and addressed for senior citizens in using technology. Firstly, the visual functions decrease as people age which has repercussions on acuity in spotting minuscule details on screen. Secondly, some older people put off using online tools because they see them as being arduous and time-consuming. Thirdly, security concerns are omnipresent among the old fogey, with many of them lacking confidence in their own knowledge of how to navigate the online tools properly. For instance, particular apps like G pay, internet banking, Paytm and MobiKwik, being user friendly cannot be easily accessed by retired people despite their safety measures of these applications. Fourthly, owing to technological malpractice such as cyberbullying, older people are petrified to operate the apps or websites.
To resolve the issue of difficulty in the usage of gadgets by elderly, simple devices and apps which are better designed for ageing hands and eyes should be fashioned. Although many centres across the globe are offering courses for the usage of apps, the reach of the same is scanty. Additionally, Tablet computers, which have bigger screens are recommended to use than smartphones or laptops.
At the same time, old people should be advised to use devices like ALEXA or SIRI as they have an inbuilt voice command feature which recognises the voice command given by them. All the devices should be equipped with voice recognition software and inbuilt memory storage capacity so that they can not only remind the elders about the daily routine duties like taking medicines, prescription refills, set a timer for doing laundry and setting up of wake up alarm, but also should be able to perform few activities like sending emails, messages, pictures and voice messages to others.
Furthermore, youngsters can lend their hand in educating their patriarchs about these devices with extreme patience which eventually lead to the upsurge in the utilisation of digital devices by the elderly.
