It is becoming increasingly popular to have a year off between finishing school and going to university. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

In recent times, young people began to take a break for a year between passing out of high school and getting into university. There are many benefits of doing this, however the disadvantages cannot be ignored. This essay illustrates both the pros and cons of choosing such a step after school.

Several young people often prefer to take predefined paths and mistakenly consider that field as their area of interest after their high school. Going on a break will help them to explore their passion and what career they want to pursue. This not only helps them to explore their interests, but also to understand several people and numerous life skills which may not be taught at school or university. Some people utilize this time to enhance themselves with a range of skills such as drawing, arts, or may be acting. Who knows? This hobby may become a career for them professionally and reach great heights with flying colours in that particular chosen field. In this time, they can also build new connections, travel, and find the problems the world is facing and could research towards a solution that could cause a great impact in the future.

However, besides the advantages, there are quite a number of drawbacks to this. First being the lack of motivation to continue studies. When people take a break from their academics, it is human nature that they will feel reluctant to get back to study a university course and rather prefer chilling at home. Following this, several universities wish the student to explain about this gap when put on his resume, which in many cases cannot be justified. Also, when compared to fellow friends or classmates, the student feels that they are ahead of him and this causes an increase in self doubt and leads to a fear of lagging behind. As it is said, “ An idle mind is a devil’s workplace”, when they have such an amount of leisure time in the year off, they tend to get more unnecessary thoughts such as addiction to social media or a video game which may turn the kids into couch potatoes.

In conclusion, I believe that having a break for a year after high school has many advantages and is useful to the students in several ways. But there are as many disadvantages of this break which can have an impact as strong as the benefits. So it is advised that students should keep in mind both these advantages and disadvantages before deciding to go for such a gap after school.

Have you ever been to any island? Yes, I have! Actually, I lived on an island for 3 months back in 2016. My mother was offered to work at a resort for 2 years, so I joined them there for 3 months.  Isl and life was quite an interesting experience! Are there any islands in your country? Yes, there are. There is one famous island called X, famed for its  crystal clear  water and white sands. I’ve heard the pagodas are very interesting to visit there, as well.
